Consumer Unit Upgrades

Uncategorised

Your Consumer Unit is the heart of your home. Its job is twofold: to distribute electricity safely to all the different circuits around the property: to protect people within your household or workplace.

When they first introduced, ‘fuse boards’ as they were known then, originally housed electrical fuses. They were not as sensitive or as fast as the modern consumer units, could be overloaded and tampered with and were the cause of many electrical fires.

Signs That Indicate An Upgrade Is Needed

Here are some of the indications that you should have your fuse board or Consumer Unit inspected or replaced:

  • The fuse board is more than 20 years old.
  • The fuse board is not fitted with an RCD (residual current device). These are now required on all new and modified circuits.
  • There are blanking plates or fuse holders missing, leaving live parts exposed.
  • The fuse board is constructed of wood or plastic – this is a huge fire risk and should be acted upon.
  • If fuses keep blowing, it could be an indication of a larger problem somewhere else.
  • Burned or fused parts within the fuse board can indicate that the demand being placed on the board outstrips its ability to deliver it safely.

Upgrading Process

We are happy to provide quotes free of charge. We can arrange to view the property and give advice on whether upgrading is necessary, and the best course of action to take if it does. If you choose to accept our quote we will book you into our diary on a date to suit you.

During the actual upgrading process, we will need access to all rooms within the property, and the power will be off for a minimum of 4 hours. Once finished we will guide you through the use of new devices contained in the unit. We will then issue an invoice and the relevant certificates, along with informing Building Control.
